Most of us do our best to keep the heating bill low, conserve water, and get good gas mileage out of our cars. But do we ever take time to shave a few dollars off our weekly grocery bill? Take a look at these tips to help keep your grocery expenses at a minimum.

  • ImageBE PREPARED: Everything at the supermarket—the colorful and appealing packaging, strategic placement of the products on shelves, even the layout of the store—has been carefully devised to get you to put as many items in your cart as possible. So come to the store prepared with a list of what you need. Give yourself a small allowance for impulse items, but don’t go overboard. Buy what you went there to get.
  • FOCUS ON THE PERIMITER: For the most part, the healthy, less-processed foods are at the outer aisles of the grocery store. Dairy, fruits, vegetables, and lean meats are the most nutritious options and they go further in the kitchen. Remember that the store’s main thoroughfares, like the paths to bread and milk, are usually strewn with high-priced land mines. Get better-for-you snacks ahead of time and you’ll be able to avoid these aisles altogether.
  • BE PRO-PRODUCE: Most of your time in the grocery store should be spent in the produce section. Fruits and vegetables are lower in calories and offer incredible health benefits over other processed food options. Frozen and canned fruits and veggies are a good alternative when your favorites are not in season, but watch out for those containing high sodium and sugar levels.

Groceries are necessary, but spending too much money on them isn’t. With a little planning and know-how, you can be in control of your grocery shopping and bring your bill down significantly. Be prepared, be smart, and enjoy saving money!
